How to Install Made to Measure Window Shutters

Writer: The Blind GuyThe Blind Guy

It’s official: your custom-designed shutter fittings are on their way. You’ve remeasured the window’s dimensions, checked you ordered them to the right address and made sure that the colours match perfectly, but something is still missing. Your next job? Choosing how to get them fitted.

DIY or Professional Installation

The first decision you make will be if you’d like your made to measure shutters installed by a professional or whether you’d like to take on the job yourself. The choice is entirely yours, with certain complex types of shutter being a task more suited to professionals than others.

Materials and Tools

Regardless of whether or not you decide to install the shutters yourself, you’ll be able to get a better feel for what the project demands if you know what tools to use. Since made to measure shutters are pre-fitted to your window there isn’t a need for cutting or sanding tools, which is one of the reasons why people often opt to install this type of shutter themselves. You’ll only need a cloth, spirit level and measuring tape.

The Perfect Fit

You may now be asking; don’t shutters need a drill to be installed? In most cases, you’d be right. But, if you’re using our Perfect Fit blinds that are made to measure, then the shutter installation process won’t demand a last-minute trip to the hardware shop. You won’t even need to sweep up any plaster afterwards!

These shutter fittings are premade to your specifications and will simply clip onto the inside of the window frame (the bead). This is a fancy way of saying that the installation process can be done within the hour, which is no bad thing if you’re in a rush to beat the sunrise and get some decent sleep to test the shutters for yourself. This isn’t to say that the process is tiring though, and it can be carried out in six ten-minute steps:

1.   Assemble the Shutter Fitting

Attach the fitting sections according to the instructions provided.

2.   Measure your Order

Check that shutter fittings match the window’s dimensions with your tape measure.

3.   Wipe Down the Frame

Using a soft cloth, wipe down the window frame (where your shutter fittings will be going).

4.   Attach the Perfect Fit Clips

Gently slide the packaged clips between the window’s glass and rubber beading, distributing them evenly until each is installed.

5.   Fit the Shutters Into the Frame

Carefully lift the assembled frame and push each corner into the corresponding clip until you hear an affirmative click.

6.   Adjust, Test and Clean

Adjust the frame by gently pushing it in the desired direction so as not to damage the clips. You can then test the slats by opening and closing them before removing any dust or dirt particles.

Made to measure shutters are, in the simplest terms, a lot easier to fit than other types, and that’s why we named them Perfect Fit. But, if you find yourself needing help when installing them yourself, or have any other questions then don’t hesitate to give us a ring at 0141 261 8482. We’re always happy to help!
